Better yields and quality in fruit crops through optimum pollination

TRIPOL has been specially developed by Koppert Biological Systems for fruit crops and can house three large bumblebee colonies. TRIPOL is weather-resistant: rainproof, insulated and ventilated, allowing the bumblebees to perform even better. Wind pollination barely plays any role in the pollination of most fruit crops. Most varieties are cross-pollinators or neighbour-pollinators, and are strongly dependent on insect pollination. Bumblebees and other bees are the most effective pollinators, and therefore play a crucial role. Honeybee colonies of sufficient size and quality are however difficult to obtain. Bumblebees are a good alternative for honeybees, but can also be used very well in combination with honeybees.

Sweet cherry

Trials in 2005 showed that the combination of bumblebees with normal bees produced a 23% greater yield in comparison with just normal bees. Bumblebees are also very effective in half-covered cherry crops. Bumblebees do not tend to fly into the plastic and are better able to find their way under plastic than normal bees. The recommendation is to use 3 TRIPOL + 3 honeybee colonies per hectare.

Outdoor strawberry

Good pollination is the basis for good fruit quality. Bumblebees have been used for many years with great success in covered strawberry cultivation to ensure a high yield and good fruit quality. Poorly developed or misshaped fruit can be the result of poor pollination. The greatest proportion of the pollination takes place with the aid of insects such as bumblebees and other bees. The wind is a less important factor in the pollination of outdoor strawberries.

Quality is set to become an increasingly important aspect for strawberry cultivation in the coming years.

Imagine that you increase your percentage of class 1 by at least 1% by using bumblebees. You will have immediately earned back your investment in the bumblebees.

For outdoor strawberry cultivation, the recommendation is to use 2 TRIPOL, possibly supplemented with normal bees.

Blueberries

Unlike normal bees, bumblebees can also cause vibrations in the flowers. This is necessary in the base of blueberries in order to release the pollen. This behaviour brings about a clear increase in blueberry crops. This has been proven by research in the USA (Stubbs and Drummond, University of Maine, USA).

The recommendation is to use 2 TRIPOL per hectare, possibly supplemented with normal bees.

Apples and pears

Apple and pear trees also need good pollination in order to produce good quality apples and pears. The use of bumblebees gives you extra certainty of good fruit formation. The recommendation is to use 2 TRIPOL, possibly supplemented with normal bees.
