Do you need good pollination? TRIPOL bumble bees guarantee a flying start

From this season Koppert Biological Systems delivers the bumble bees for fruit crops in a new house.

TRIPOL contains 3 large bumble bee colonies and is developed especially for pollination in field crops such as cherry, plum, apricot, peach, pear, apple, strawberry, blackberry, raspberry, blueberry, red currant and black currant.

The minimum amount of bumble bee workers has increased from 240-300 to 350-400. This guarantees an increased pollination capacity of 35% in the very first week after placement. This is particularly important for crops with short flowering times.

TRIPOL contains a patented pollen-storage system to ensure optimal pollen provision during transport. This can be closed off just before placement to encourage activity in the crop.

The product is weather-proof, insulating and ventilating.

A handy table on the side of each TRIPOL shows its pollination capacity. Under average conditions the bumble bees of one TRIPOL can visit 390,000 flowers per day.

The importance of good pollination

Good pollination and fruit set depend on a number of factors, including plant structure, nutrition, pollen yield, and the presence of sufficient numbers of pollinating insects. The effective period for pollination and fruit set only lasts a few weeks, and during this short space of time you must create the most favourable conditions for pollination, leaving nothing to chance. One approach is to improve pollination by using insects such as bumble bees and honey bees, as this results in improved yield and fruit quality. This means more stones or pips per fruit, and better fruit shape. TRIPOL bumble bees from Koppert can help, as with TRIPOL you are guaranteed a flying start to each season.

What is TRIPOL?

TRIPOL has been specially developed by Koppert Biological Systems for fruit crops and houses 3 large bumble bee colonies. TRIPOL is weather-proof, and the excellent insulation and ventilation allow the bees to perform even better.

Seven good reasons for choosing TRIPOL

1. TRIPOL gives you extra assurance of achieving good pollination under less favourable weather conditions:

  • bumble bees are active from 8° C. Honey bees become active at around 15°-18° C.
  • bumble bees are active on cloudy days. Honey bees are less active at low light levels.
  • bumble bees will still fly in winds of up to 70 km/hour. Honey bees stop flying at 30 km/hour.

2. Bumble bees lack the sophisticated communication system of honey bees, and are therefore less likely to fly to more attractive crops. This makes TRIPOL bumble bees more consistent.

3. Bumble bees are much more efficient pollinators than honey bees. Bumble bees mainly forage for pollen rather than nectar, and transfer more pollen to the pistils with each visit. Moreover, bumble bees forage more widely than honey bees, thus benefiting cross-pollination (including triploid cultivations).

4. In contrast to honey bees, bumble bees use 'buzz pollination', which is necessary to release the pollen in crops such as blackcurrant. This gives a clear increase in yield.

5. Bumble bees work better under protection or semi-protection, as they have a better sense of direction.

6. Bumble bees are safer for you and your employees because there are fewer of them in the crop, and they seldom sting.

7. TRIPOL is also ideal for use in combination with honey bees.

TRIPOL bumble bees from Koppert, the best choice!

  • TRIPOL contains 3 large bumble bee colonies comprising a minimum of 350 to 400 workers. This guarantees enormous pollination capacity in the very first week after placement. This is particularly important for crops with short flowering times.
  • TRIPOL contains a patented pollen-storage system to ensure optimal pollen provision during transport. This can be closed off just before placement to encourage activity in the crop.
  • After successful pollination in an early flowering crop, you can easily transfer TRIPOL to later flowering varieties, for example from pears to apples.
  • The quality of TRIPOL is reliable. The bumble bees are reared by Koppert Biological Systems in accordance with established quality standards, and are disease and pest free.

Pollination capacity of TRIPOL

'How many flowers can the bumble bees from one TRIPOL visit each day?'

The degree of bumble bee activity depends on the weather conditions, the time of day and the crop. A handy table on the side of each TRIPOL shows its pollination capacity. You can also assess this yourself. If an average of 27 bumble bees return to a TRIPOL every 10 minutes, this gives an estimated 390,000 flowers visited per day per TRIPOL. This result can be achieved under average conditions.

In which crops can TRIPOL be used?

Apple - Pear - Sweet cherry - Sour cherry - Strawberry - Raspberry - Blackberry - Plum - Peach - Nectarine - Apricot - Blueberry - Cranberry - Blackcurrant - Redcurrant - Gooseberry - Kiwi - Almond
