Introduction
- open package carefully inside the greenhouse
- do not touch the pupae
- bend strips and tear off
- suspend the cards in the crop, if possible approximately 75 cm under plant head
- not in direct sunlight
Environmental conditions
No reproduction at temperatures lower than 15°C/59°F. High relative humidity stimulates emergence of syrphid pupae.
Storage and handling
- storage after receipt: 1-2 days
- storage temperature: 8-10°C/47-50°F
- in the dark
Remarks
Hoverfly larvae are only effective on plants without hairs, such as pepper. Larvae eat mainly at night hence they are difficult to spot in the crop during the day. Adult hoverflies need pollen and nectar as food source for the egg production.
Appearance
Larvae: transparant, 10-20 mm long. There are three larval stages. Larvae have no leggs
Eggs: white, oblong and easy to spot with the naked eye at the undersides of the leaves near aphid colonies
Adults: 10-20 mm in size, abdomen bright yellow with alternating narrow and white black bands. Wings are spread when adult rests
Pupae: pear-shape, brown-orange like colour with dark bands. Present on the leaves
Mode of action
Larvae eat aphids completely. One larva consumes 300-500 aphids during her entire lifetime. The larval stage lasts approximately two weeks at 20°C/68°F.
Visual effect
Aphid colonies are reduced significantly in size within a week from the moment when a Syrphid population has been built up.
