Koppert starts a new challenge in Chile

Koppert opens new subsidiary in Chile

Koppert Biological Systems has founded a new subsidiary in Chile. The official name of the company is Koppert Chile S.A. and it is located in Quillota near Valparaíso, V region of Chile. Koppert Chile is a joint venture with a local company, Xilema, producing and selling natural enemies for control of pests in fruit trees. The activities of Xilema started in 1995. Many years of investigation (in collaboration with universities) has led to the production of several native natural enemies used for control of mealybug in grapes, apples, blueberry and other fruit crops. The company saw a possibility to improve agricultural management and production for several other crops (such as tomatoes and blueberries) by a collaboration with Koppert.

Koppert Chile was founded in early 2009 and Martin Riegel Perez was identified as the right person to develop Koppert’s activities. The first importation of Bombus terrestris to Chile took place in April 2009. The Natupol colonies were used for tomato nethouses in the northern region of the country. After a few months the hives were introduced in the desert area of Arica.

On the other side of the country growers have already been using bumblebees in their blueberry orchards, and others are now starting the practice. Both are interested in the solution Koppert is offering for open field crops: Tripol, a hive especially suited for outdoor use.

One of the most important blueberry producers in the world

Stretching more than 4000 km from north to south, Chile offers a wide variety of climates. These climates, together with its favourable geographic position allow the country to be one of the most important fruit producers below the equator. Among its top export products are: table grapes, wine, avocados, apples, cherries and blueberries. A special mention goes to the ‘ blue gold’ business as the blueberry production is called. The advantage of being in the southern hemisphere allows Chile to export to the North-American market when local product is not available, approximately from October to March.

Benefits of using bumblebees in blueberries

The use of bumblebees for pollination of open field blueberries is common in the USA and Canada and has drawn the attention of more and more growers in Chile. The results of the use of bumblebees in blueberries are: higher production, improved quality of the berries and earlier crop maturity. These are all essential improvements to ensure maximum profitability for an industry that is facing a reduction in the average selling price of the final product. An additional benefit is that bumblebees can easily cope with the weather conditions that are usual in the south of Chile during the blueberry flowering season.

To be sure that the growers get the maximum return from their investments Koppert pays a lot of attention to support and service. Koppert closely follows the placement of the Tripol hives in the field and advises the grower on matters like the effects on bumblebees of possible chemical treatments to the crop.
