Introduction

  • open bottle in the glasshouse
  • place the bottle on the soil or hang in between the plants (for protection against ants)
  • after hatching, gall-midges are capable to leave the bottle

Environmental conditions

High relative humidities give better effects. The night temperature has to be above 16°C/61°F for oviposition.

Storage and handling

  • storage after receipt: 1-2 days
  • storage temperature: 10-15°C/50-59°F
  • in the dark

Remarks

The pupae need to be protected from dehydration, so do not scatter them

Appearance

Adults: size 2.5 mm, fragile, long legs

Eggs: oblong, size 0.1x0.3 mm, shiny, orange-red

Larvae: size 0.3-3 mm, orange, in aphid colonies

Pupae: in soil

Mode of action

Adult gall-midges are active at night and are attracted to aphid colonies by the smell of honeydew. Eggs are deposited in the aphid colonies. Larvae paralyse the aphids and suck out their contents.

Visual effect

Aphids killed by the larvae hang on the leaf, connected by their mouthparts. Consequently they shrivel, turn brown or black and decay.
