Cyclamens make up a group of over 20 perennial flowering plants of the primrose family. They are native to Europe and across the Mediterranean Basin as far east as Iran. Their upswept flowers and delicately patterned leaves make cyclamens popular potted houseplants. The cyclamen’s leaves, flowers and roots grow directly out of a tuber, and different species range in height from 5 centimetres (2 inches) to 30 centimetres (12 inches). In their native climate, cyclamen species begin to come up in the Fall, grow through the winter, die off in the spring and lay dormant through the (dry Mediterranean) summer. Cyclamens have a very sensitive root system that is susceptible to fungal infection. Production during mid-spring and summer should happen under shade to prevent sun scorching.
