There are up to 40 species of the genus Ulmus in the plant family Ulmacea. Elms are deciduous and semi-deciduous trees. They often form part of natural forests. The species is difficult to differentiate owing to the ease of hybridization between them and the development of local seed-sterile microspecies in some areas, mainly in the field elm.
