Combating vine weevil successfully

The black vine weevil, Otiorhynchus sulcatus, is a pest in many ornamental crops (e.g. rhododendron, cyclamen and azalea), as well as in strawberries and other fruit crops in both temperate and sub-tropical regions. Of course, there are chemical products for use against adult vine weevils, but without getting rid of the larvae, growers will continue to experience problems. This is why there is a need for a biological approach.
The larvae and pupae of the black vine weevil (Otiorhynchus sulcatus) can be controlled with our beneficial nematodes. Depending on the soil temperature our product Larvanem (Heterorhabiditis bacteriophora) or Entonem (Steinernema feltiae) can be used in tree nursery crops (yew, thuja, rhododendron), berry cultivation, strawberries, ornamental crops and various pot plants, etc. Application of the nematodes is safe for the user and fast and effective, when applied in the right manner.
After application, the parasitic nematodes actively hunt for the larvae and penetrate them. The nematodes then feed on the contents of the larvae, releasing certain bacteria from their intestinal tract. These bacteria convert tissue from the host into substances that are easy for the nematodes to absorb. The larvae die within a few days. The population development of the nematodes within the host population is dependent on the number (dosage) applied and the size of the host population. In this regard, it is important that Larvanem and Entonem be applied on uncovered, moist soil.
