We’re making an important change to our 1L bottles. From now on, they will be made with recycled materials, while still delivering the same quality and durability our customers are accustomed to. The new bottles are fully recyclable and support our sustainability targets.
By 2030, European regulations will require plastic packaging to contain at least 35% recycled material. We are taking early steps to meet that target. Together with our trusted supplier Houweling, we’ve developed a more sustainable version of our 1L bottle that fits both the environmental goals and the practical needs of growers.
The new bottles are made from 50% post-consumer recycled plastic and 50% post-industrial recycled plastic. The material is still ensuring durability and compatibility with our products. The LCA (Life Cycle Analysis) results are clear: the new recycled bottles produce significantly less CO₂. In fact, each new 1L bottle saves up to 39% in CO₂ emissions compared to the earlier virgin plastic version. It’s a meaningful change that adds up quickly across our portfolio.
To ensure the continuous quality, safety and performance of our beneficial insects the new packaging had to be thoroughly tested. The results we received are very positive and we are monitoring batches during the introduction phase to ensure continued quality.
‘This is just the beginning, - states Jolien Wechgelaar, Global Innovation Specialist Packaging. ‘As part of our roadmap to improve packaging sustainability, we are also aiming to developing mono-material solutions to improve recyclability, reducing the number of materials in our products and testing other formats like 100ml bottles and buckets, which will follow the successful 1L bottle rollout.’
Our long-term ambition is clear: smarter packaging design, less material, and more circularity.
