The GFIA was established in 2014 and is an initiative by the Abu Dhabi authorities. They wished to facilitate the cooperation of 40 of the most influential organizations concerned with agriculture and horticulture. The initiative involved organizations such as the UN, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the World Bank.
