Cannabis is an annual plant that has a growth period of April – September in outdoor cultivation. Indoor cultivation (hydroponic or soil) is grown on a continuous basis. Cannabis belongs in the family Cannabaceae and may include three species, C. sativa, C. indica, and C. ruderalis, (APG II system) or one variable species.
Medical cannabis (or medical marijuana) refers to the use of cannabis and its constituent cannabinoids, to treat disease or improve symptoms. Cannabis is used to reduce nausea and vomiting during chemotherapy, to improve appetite in people with HIV/AIDS, and to treat chronic pain and muscle spasms.
