Triticosecale

Triticale

About

This is a hybrid cereal – a crossing of wheat (Triticum) and rye (Secale) created in laboratories in Scotland and Germany in the late 1880s – to create a cereal with the yield potential and grain quality of wheat, and the disease resistance and environmental tolerance of rye. It is grown for forage or animal fodder. It is now a commercially viable crop and can be found in certain breakfast cereals and in health food stores.
